Aaahhhh Summer. Sunshine, beaches, bikinis...and beautifully smooth skin. Music to an estheticians ears!

This is the busiest hair removal season for the beauty industry and the best time to build your clientele. Seasoned sugarists know they have a consistent tool to bring clients in the door no matter what time of year--even the hot summers. After 10 summers in the treatment room in hot California, here are my tips for keeping you and your clients cool and perfectly smooth.

8 Musts for Summer Sugaring Success:

  1. Chill Out Your Room: Keep the temperature in your room around 70 degrees to keep your sugar paste consistent. When you are sugaring back to back, it is important to keep you cool and keep your clients body temperature down if they have been outside and their skin is warm. Year round have a fan oscillating to keep the air in your room circulating too!
  2. Firm Up: Order a paste with a bit firmer consistency than you would in the cooler months. Your hands might be warm and the clients skin will warm up your paste as well. Work with your sugar supplier to find the right paste in their line up that will work in your climate. They know their line best and want you to be a huge success!
  3. Hot Hands?: Do you tend to run hot yourself? Try dialing back your coffee consumption, use peppermint oil on the base of your neck to keep your internal temps cool, or try using a second glove on your sugar hand to keep your heat from softening that paste.
  4. Powder Up Buttercup: Keep your powder (and a dry washcloth) closer at hand to keep sweaty areas in check. Don’t over powder as it will thicken up your paste. As you move over the area, you might need to dab with the wash cloth followed by another quick dusting of powder. If you get stuck, you can remove the paste with a warm washcloth and repowder the area. Don’t worry, you got this!
  5. Cool Globes: I always keep cool globes in a skincare fridge for those clients whose faces get inflamed easily. After the sugaring treatment, use a calming gel (one of my faves is Hale & Hush Hydrate Gel) and roll the cool globes over the freshly sugared skin. Your client will feel extra cool and special and their skin will calm down quickly. Try a dusting of mineral sunscreen to kick things up a notch for luxury and sun protection too! My fave is Advanced Minerals!
  6. Morning Appointments: Have a client that ALWAYS runs hot and sweats like crazy? Book them in the morning! No workouts or coffee before for this client either! Trust me, morning appointments for them will make a huge difference for both you and them.
  7. Strips: I know we are super proud that we don’t need to use a pile of sticks and muslin strips like waxers do. It is a wise idea to keep some pellon or non-woven strips in your back bar for those times when the sugar gets too soft on the skin to remove. Simply remove any excess sugar with your hand, then apply a strip to the area, rub the strip a bit, then remove like you used to in the old days of waxing and the sugar & hair beneath will slide off like a dream.
  8. 2 Smaller Balls: Keep control of our paste and get creative. If I know a client gets hot during a Brazilian session, I will double glove my sugar hand and take the first ball of your preferred paste and sugar the sides, top, and skip straight to the backside. Take the first glove and paste off, and take a firmer paste in your new glove to sugar the labia. If you have an extremely hot client that always sweats midway through, start with the labia and your firm paste then switch out for complete the sides, top, and backside!

Remember to ORDER EARLY from your sugar supplier in the summer to avoid hot delivery trucks and shortage of supply!

Cheers to your best and coolest summer yet! #wegotthis

Are you interested in learning more about body sugaring? Or are you a sugar professional that already knows how to sugar and you are looking for better ways to take up your business? Welcome to the Sugar Show Podcast. I'm your host, Anna Tiger Podcast. As a fellow at me who learned to sugar 11 years ago and script my solo skincare business, I want to share not only my sugaring wisdom, but introduce you to my network of friends who are masters in their field and want to help you expand your sugaring business. Let's get started. Hello, hello, and happy summer. It's Shannon Your Sugar Mama. And what I know about summer is beaches, bikinis, and smooth skin. My clients, no matter how crazy this 2020 has been, they do not miss their sugar appointments. And I have a lot of students in the sugar tribe that are contacting me saying, How the heck do I deal with warm summer weather? And I so I figured I would put a podcast together so that I could share all of my tips and tricks with all of you and just make sure that you can learn how to keep your cool this summer. So uh if you are having trouble booking clients, um, not because of COVID reasons, but just in general, you're someone who is doing facials and you're just not sure if you should add sugar to your treatment menu, um myself and the members of the sugar tribe will say, do it. Learn to sugar. Uh, it's the best thing that we ever chose, especially in the summertime because we are all slammed. So if you are having trouble keeping your um sugar working for you in the right way, if you're getting stuck, I've got some tips and tricks for you. So let's have at it. Number one, to ensure sugaring success, you always need to be mindful of temperature. So the first thing I want you to do is chill out your treatment room. Okay, no matter what the temperature is outside, the temperature inside needs to be about 70 to 72 degrees. If you can take it a little cooler, that's great. Clients will walk into your treatment room after being out in the hot summer sun and say, Oh, this feels amazing. And they initially just kind of feel that relaxation and their body temperatures will hopefully cool off a little bit. Um, it will also keep you cool throughout the day. Okay, so I'll sugar anywhere from 16 to 20 Brazilians in a day, and I need to keep cool. Um, and and you need to keep cool no matter if it's the beginning of the day or the end of the day. So try to keep that thermostat regulated. And I also recommend that you have an oscillating fan. So either a tower fan like I have in one of my treatment rooms, I have a counter fan, and a few of the sugar tribers have told me they actually will install a fan that mounts to the wall and can beam down on the bed. Because if you keep that air circulating in the treatment room, it'll just keep you cool, your clients cool, and the sugar will remain at a great consistency to do the treatment. So the second thing is to firm up your paste. Order a paste with a bit firmer consistency than you're used to. Work with your sugar company. They are amazing at helping you understand which formula is right for you. But I find that if I use a little bit firmer paste, if I'm warm, my hands are warm, and I warm up that sugar ball easily, or if my clients have come in and their skin is really warm, if I just use a little bit firmer consistency of paste, it's gonna hold up in my hands and glide over that skin perfectly. Um, now if you have hot hands, tip number three is if you just can't seem to cool down and keep that paste at the rice consistency because your hands and you run warm, try doing a few things. First of all, dial back your uh caffeine consumption. So coffee, anything that's gonna kind of heat up your body temperature in the morning, tea, things like that, that kind of get your adrenaline going. Try to dial back on that and keep your body temperature low. I really find that I love um peppermint oil. I have to have some here because if it gets warm in my in my office, I'll just dab a little bit on my wrists or put a little bit behind my neck, and it just cools your internal temperatures and will help you stay cool throughout the treatment. Great for uh menopause time too, for those of you that are older. Um and then, so like keep yourself cool. Drink a ton of water. Make sure that you can keep yourself cool for your surface of your hands. But then also you can use a second glove because that'll put a little bit of a barrier between your hand and the paste. And if you do get hot and you are melting your paste, you can take that glove off and have a fresh, clean glove to take a little extra ball of sugar out. But we'll talk about that more in just a second. Now, powder is your friend in the summer, but be warned, I do not want you throwing like a ton of powder all over the client's uh face or body. Okay. Powder is your friend, but if you use too much, it will thicken your paste. So I want you to just use a light dusting. If you find that your client is sweaty, you can just take a nice dry washcloth, pat the area down, light dusting, remember, of powder, not a dumping of powder, a dusting of powder, a light dusting of powder, and um, and then continue on with your service. If you get stuck, you can use a little extra powder on that ball of sugar, hold the skin tight and flick again. That helps you to get unstuck as well. So if you absolutely cannot get unstuck, go ahead and wipe the area off like a bikini or knees or ankles with a warm washcloth, a little light dusting of powder again, not a dumping, a little light dusting of powder, and you should be able to finish that area. The next tip that I love are I like using cool globes. You can get them through your um, usually through a supplier, um, a professional supply like Universal Company, something like that. You can also get them on Amazon, and I keep them in a skincare fridge. I love me some skincare fridge. We'll do another podcast on keeping your products cool on another podcast. Um, but use a uh a skincare fridge and keep some cool globes, sanitized cool globes, uh in the freezer or in the refrigerator. Okay. So what I love to do is especially on the face, I don't know that I would use the globes on the bikini because it might be a little bit startling. Um, but you could absolutely do that as well. But on the face, I will do a sugar, and people tend to get warm, their skin tends to get a little bit warmer. I will use a calming serum. Uh, sweet and true has a great one, the soothing serum. I love Hale and Hush. They have the duo that I always talk about, which is the Hale and Hush um relief powder with a little bit of hydrate gel. I'll mix that up, maybe use it on brows, use it on the whole face. And then take those two globes and roll them over that product and it'll cool the skin down. Your clients will feel very cool, and it's just a luxurious experience, and it really shows that you're taking your treatment up a level and showing that you want to cool that skin down. Um, if somebody is super, super hot and just cannot cool down, you can also try using the cool globes pre. The only problem with the cool globes is it causes the muscles in the follicles to the erector peli muscles to kind of constrict and you might have a difficult time sliding that hair out. So try not to use the cool globes unless you have to in the beginning, use them towards the end. I love me some cool globes. And after, a little side note, after I use my calming serum, my cool globes, get that skin, um, just kind of calm down a little bit. I will actually dust on, I love my advanced minerals um makeup. I'm not a makeup artist, but in the previous podcast, you heard that you can actually just dust on the minerals. They'll take down any inflammation and provide a beautiful glow for your clients. So check out the uh mineral makeup dusting idea as well. Um, next idea is uh morning appointments. So if you have a client that already always runs hot and sweats like crazy, try booking them in the morning. I find that when clients uh come in in the morning, first of all, temperatures are usually cooler. And when they come in, their adrenaline hasn't been going all day. They haven't don't let them work out, tell them they can't drink coffee as well, and get them in in the first one or two appointments in the morning, and they will thank you, and you will thank you because it'll be a whole lot easier to work on them and it won't take you as long. So, morning appointments are a must for sweaty babes. Um, next tip is strips. Now I know that we love the fact that sugar is just a glove and a ball of sugar, and you don't need a pile of muslin strips and sticks and all of that for sugar. But I will tell you that one of my tricks, and my sugar trivers know this because I coach them on it all the time, is always keep some Pellin strips. Those are the white, kind of firmer um hair removal strips. They are like a non-woven cotton. I always keep those in various sizes, little brows, a little bit larger for just like a knee, quick, or a wrist. Um, and then just a little bit longer if you're in uh the bikini area and you get stuck. You can always use a strip. It is not wrong. So you take the sugar like you normally would. And if you find that you're getting stuck in an area or the sugar won't come off, don't try to manhandle it and keep pulling, pulling, pulling, pulling. You'll irritate the skin. You don't want to harm the skin at all. Just take a small little piece of muslin, roll it over the top, uh, place it down, roll it over the top of the sugar, and just do a quick flick like you would with your hand. Again, hold that skin tight, do a click, quick flick, and you can get that sugar off no problem. Um, I think some people think you cannot, it's against the rules to use sticks or strips, but in some ways it does help get you out in a pinch, especially in a hot treatment room. So don't be afraid, always have some pre-cut uh strips to just help you get through those times where you just might get stuck. Um, the last tip that I have in the treatment room is to use two smaller balls. So when we teach you with your basic certification course, um, we teach you to be organized, to start at the top, say on a Brazilian and work your way down to the backside. So let's talk about a Brazilian for a second. So if you are someone who does a lot of Brazilians and you find that your sugar is getting really soft by the time you get into the labia, there is nothing wrong with dialing back the amount of sugar that you have in your hand. Do the sides, the top, everything that's a little bit less moist, and then actually skip the labia, throw their legs in the air, or roll them to the side, and do their backside first. Okay. Now I do this with a double gloved hand. I actually will take two gloves. I the first one I'll take my regular paste, I would normally do a Brazilian with. Usually it's a little on the softer side because I'm pretty quick. And I will roll that over everything but the labia. Take that glove off. Now you'll have a fresh sanitized glove underneath. And then take a ball of the firmer paste that you would use in the summer that holds up in your hand a little bit better. And again, talk to your sugar supplier, they can help you with exactly what you need. Take that ball of sugar and then do the labia. Because I find that if you try to do use softer paste on the labia and the body is hot, you're gonna get stuck a lot more. Okay, especially if you're newer. So feel comfortable in using a firmer paste on the labia and the top of the mound. Okay. Now, on the other side of this, you we normally teach you again top labia backside is the flow of a bikini, right? How about getting creative and switch that up a little bit? So, what I might do, I have clients that halfway through the treatment, they just start sweating. It's anxiety, it's hot, they're, you know, freaking out, even though I try to calm them down and tell them to chill out, that they'll be fine and it'll be over in just a minute. Um, what I'll do if someone tends to run hot is I'll actually take the double glove model, I'll take the firmer consistency paste first, I'll do the labia and the top, I'll take that ball off, and then I'll do the top, sides, and booty with the smoother paste. So you can it, there's nothing wrong with doing the labia first before they start getting sweaty. The insides of the legs, go ahead and do those first if that's where they sweat like crazy. Okay. Um, as well, say you're doing uh underarms and brows, okay? If you do have a client who comes in and they are, they tend to get sweaty on their underarms, do those first before their adrenaline kind of kicks in. Go ahead and do those first. Pat with a dry washcloth after you cleanse, make sure the area is dry, light dusting, not dumping of powder, and do the underarms first. Keep the powder and the washcloth near you in case they keep sweating. But again, if there's someone who sweats all the time, have them book a morning appointment. So the last thing I want to make sure that you do is remember that heat affects sugar. And if you're in a humid climate like the south or the like northeast, and you're somewhere that's really humid, you're gonna want to make sure that you pre-order as much sugar as you possibly can and keep it in a cool, dry room temperature uh cupboard. Okay. So instead of ordering little bits at a time throughout the summer and running the risk of having the consistency of your paste be messed with, because imagine your beautiful paste sitting in a hot delivery truck, it's gonna affect the consistency. And your sugar supplier will know exactly when the best times are to order. And if you're super mindful, your vendors sometimes, your suppliers will say, hey, pre-order for the sugar, get a case or two, and they'll actually give you a discount. So try to pre-order as much paste as you can. Think about how many jars, hello. Think about how many jars of paste you go through on a regular month and up that a jar or two, and maybe order a case that month or two cases for the summer. Have your sugar, you'll never run out during bikini season. Work with your sugar supplier to make sure that you have the right paste consistency and you have enough powder. I love the companies that offer the refill programs because you can use less waste, have your backpar uh powder. Some of them are coming out with cleanser and lotion refills. It's amazing for our environment. And just have that giant jug of refill powder, cleanser, and lotion available to you so you never run out in the summer. I adore you, my friends. Stay cool. Uh, and I wish you the best and coolest summer yet because we got this together. And I look forward to seeing you in the love to sugar community or the sugar tribe very soon.
